A Bleeding Heart

I thought I was done with the blog, but a moment of complete stupidness inspired me to write down the days events. I took Clay my 6 year old to see Hotel for Dogs. I think this movie was made by the SPCA or PETA because it entices you to fall in love with every breed of dog and believe that you can easily handle a new addition to the family.

Lets start with my families animal history. When Grace was 5 we moved to Evansville, Indiana and we picked up a kitten (Henry) from the pound. We discovered that Grace is highly allergic to cat dander and gave Henry to my dear friend Heidi. Heidi and I have been friends since we were kids. During our school years her and her family inherited many of my pets.

Wiggles was my rabbit that pooped too much. Heidi's family lived in the country and adopted him for me. He was later eaten by a fox.

Then there was the blue bird that Heidi adopted and named Bruce (after the boss). Her brother Derrick and his friend accidentally shot him in the eye with a bee bee gun.

When Heidi agreed to take Henry, she was single and lived in a quiet little apartment. Henry was happy and so were we. Heidi met Jim about a year later and Jim had 2 cats of his own. When they married all 3 cats were all part of one family.

Jim and Heidi went hiking one day and found a stray dog that they fell for. Boone (after Daniel Boone National Forest) was also adopted into the family. Henry didn't like Boone, so in order to keep peace Henry began a new life in the basement. The Kriz's now have an 18 month old, a dog, and 3 cats.

Why am I telling you this?! Because it shows my warped history with animals.

We finally found the perfect pet. A shih-tzu named Reuben. He loves me and I love him. He isn't much fun for the kids. He basically lays around and sleeps all day. Clay has always wanted a "fun" dog.

After being intoxicated by Hotel for Dogs I decided we would stop by the pound and just "look." (mistake #1) The SCPA was having their annual pet adoption drive and the place was packed. They were bringing in puppies that were darling. You had to put your name in a hat and whoever drew out the largest number could take the puppy.

My second mistake came by putting our name in the hat. When we didn't win huge tears rolled down my little ones face and my my heart broke. There is a puppy rescue in Sharonville and we found ourselves there (mistake #3). Clay immediately found a darling puppy who is part beagle and part terrier. The rest is history (mistake # 4). I had no control of my actions. We had the dog in the car and my stomach felt sick.

My husband is NOT a dog lover. He tolerates Reuben. In fact Bryan is not an animal lover. I knew I was in trouble. The rest of the day I will omit. It was horrible. Tears from everyone. Actually after the shock of the situation my husband was very gracious. This was event will be tagged as a top 10 mommy mistake.

Let my adventure be a lesson to you. Don't get a puppy with out talking to your spouse. Don't take your kids to a shelter or pet store unless you are sure. Today the pup is going back. My heart is aching along with my kids. Grace's eyes are already starting to swell from her allergies.
