Today has been like nothing I have ever experience. I will re-cap quickly. We were told this morning that we could not go to Belize City to operate due to the roads being blocked by sugar cane farmers. They block the roads by burning torn up tires and if you try to drive over them your care either catches fire or blows up. So paln B was to go to the hospital and help with ENT cases and have a clinic. Lupa the hospital czar called and said the roads were closed to Orange Grove and we couldn't get to the hospital. Plan C: We went into a village with the medical team to see patients. This was a nice break. We triage the patients who came in as families and then had ENT, ORTHO and General Medicine treat them. There were woman breast feeding everywhere, people with major HTN and lots of worm issues and DM. Around noon we look over and Lupia the czar is there and says we can get through to the hospital if we drive through the sugar cane fields. We say okay. I mean there are people who were counting on surgery. We can to operate. We then drove through the fields which was scary. As soon as we arrived at the hospital we were told we could have to stay as long as 3 days. Ten years ago when this happened several people were stuck that long. So I went into the office to send a email to my family and over the radio they said that they were closing off the sugar fields and the people in the office said you better get out now. My instints told me to leave. I went to the team and said I want to leave. I don't feel safe. We started loading up our stuff and getting ready to leave. Lupa tried to talk us into staying to help with causalities. I was going to walk if I had to. So were were scared to death driving back through the sugar can fields. But obviously I made it to the hotel. I love you all and I am safe. We did see a man being thrown into the back of a truck on the way home. We just got word that 4 people are dead and 8 have been shot. The army has been called in and tear gas is everywhere. I am going to have a glass of wine.
